Two ATS observers on the Home Front during WW2. The instrument they're using is an anti-aircraft binocular gunsight telescope which was used to identify enemy aircraft.

In December 1941 Britain became the first nation to conscript women when it was decided that unmarried women between 20 and 30 were to be called up. The age limit was lowered to 19 the following year.
